Protecting native flora at the Mandai Wildlife Reserve!
Mandai Wildlife Group, Singapore

- Overview
We joined our partner, Mandai Wildlife Group, in an initiative to remove Zanzibar yam in their precinct. Zanzibar yam is an invasive, fast-growing vine species that threatens the growth of native plants by blocking sunlight.
Our team spent about an hour weeding the area, using hoes and shears to cut the entangled vines and uproot the underground tubers, which are the plant’s source of growth. Some tubers we removed were as large as two big pumpkins!

Comments from participants
-It was very rewarding to be able to take part in protecting the native flora at the Mandai Wildlife Reserve
-Very good initiative by JTB and greatly appreciate that partners and community are invited to participate
-Very interesting to learn about how Zanzibar yam can destroy forest ecosystems and the negative impact this invasive species has on the environment. I enjoyed the activity a lot and it was nice to be able to interact with JTB and JCB staff as well. Thank you for organising this event!
Comments from the partner organization
We have conducted several weeding operations in the past as continuous efforts to remove Zanzibar yam and these were typically carried out by our own staff. This time, with the help of JTB, we were able to remove nearly all the tubers in the designated area in just one hour – a tremendous effort. We hope to continue such initiatives that would help protect the native plants within the precinct.
Comments from the staff member responsible
This was an excellent opportunity for both teams from Mandai Wildlife Group and JTB.
We received feedback from participants that they learned a lot and had fun, which made us feel that the initiative was truly worthwhile. In addition, JAL and JCB, with whom we work closely on a regular basis, also participated in this event. We believe it was highly meaningful that these two key stakeholders joined us in this sustainability initiative.
Moving forward, we hope to build on this collaboration and create more opportunities for engaging our employees to contribute towards Singapore’s Sustainable Development Goals.
