A sustainable forestation project in Mie Prefecture

Misatocho, Tsu, Mie Prefecture

Overview

About 65% of the land area in Mie Prefecture is covered by forests, many of which are well-maintained industrial forests. This activity provided an experience of the current state of forests in Japan (Mie Prefecture) and the world and how proper forestry can contribute to a sustainable society, since lumber is a renewable resource. We also had a chance to learn about the vital importance of sustainable forest management, in which thinning and cutting are just as important as planting trees, and after viewing a demonstration of actual cutting work using chainsaws we made SDGs straps using lumber from the thinning work.

Comments from the partner organization

Usually this activity is conducted mainly for school groups, and we conduct numerous classes at elementary schools as well. This was the first time we provided it for an ordinary business. This also was the first time we incorporated a tree-cutting experience, since it cannot be conducted unless the circumstances are right in the location for the experience. In addition, while normally we make items such as chopsticks in the craft activity using lumber from thinning, this time we made straps featuring the SDGs pinwheel logo, for the first time. We needed to use sandpaper to smoothen the round pieces of thinning lumber, and we worked hard to build forms divided equally into 17 sections.

Since our role is to promote educational activities, from day to day we promote projects from the perspective of training people to carry the community into the future.
As the population of young people decreases from year to year, we want to get on the same general track in thinking about how to enable the children who will lead it in the future to play active roles in vitalizing the community, with a sense of pride.
We hope that this will help, even a little, to strengthen adults' consciousness and activities regarding setting good examples for children, to contribute to their growth and progress, based on the keyword of the SDGs.
