Narita Airport and vicinity

City of Narita "Sakura No Oka Park" Cleanup Activities and Airport Tour

Overview "Sanrizuka Sakura No Oka Park" is located near the maintenance area on the south side of Narita International Airport’s Runway A. As its name implies, is a hill on which numerous cherry trees grow, and in the spring it is packed with many visitors who come to enjoy the combination of cherry blossoms and aircraft. This project involved cleanup activities while enjoying the views of arriving and departing aircraft.
In the afternoon, participants went to Narita Airport’s Terminal 1 for a tour of the airport. This special tour helped to deepen participants’ understandings of the SDGs, as Community Coexistence Division Manager Abe of Narita International Airport Corporation (NAA) carefully explained the airport’s eco-airport initiatives while showing them around the airport.

Comments from participants

・ We participated as a family. The children really enjoyed joining in the cleanup activities while watching the airplanes. While these cleanup activities were conducted as part of SDGs initiatives, it seems to me that they were an excellent opportunity for children enjoy themselves while participating. The children also seemed very happy to be able to see aircraft arriving and departing up close during the afternoon tour. Although our children still are small, I hope that this experience will help them to grow into children who can understand the earth's environment and resources. I hope that we as adults will keep environmental resources in mind in each and every one of our everyday activities as well. We also are grateful to those who played with our children during the lunch break.

・ This was a very meaningful experience, in which we were able to get together with colleagues for the first time in a while and to see them as mothers and fathers of their own children - a side of them that we can only glimpse in the workplace. The airport tour too was a very interesting and valuable experience, in which airport staff explained things to us clearly. Next time, I want to bring my family along to participate as well.

・ I think the Sakura No Oka Park Cleanup Activities are an excellent program that helps to contribute to the community. The scenery was beautiful, and we were able to enjoy the cleanup activities instead of feeling like we were just picking up litter.
While cleaning up on the hill with views of aircraft, people who had come to take photos of the aircraft thanked us for our efforts. That helped me to get a sense for the importance of this project.
During the tour of Narita Airport, we were able to see the deserted South Wing of Terminal 1. We also were able to see inside the airport facilities while listening to an explanation of the departures floor (4F). It was both fun and educational to hear the descriptions provided by NAA staff.

・ It proved highly meaningful to be able to spend even a short time with JBX through cleanup activities. It also was enjoyable to hear in-depth descriptions of things that one doesn’t usually see, during the Narita Airport tour.
One suggestion for the future would be to incorporate an active program that children can enjoy (such as a treasure hunt), to make the program even more enjoyable and encourage more interaction. Thanks for all of your hard work!

・ During the cleanup activities, many local residents thanked us for our effort and told us that it was the first time they had seen people cleaning up in the area. I was impressed by how this was not only an enjoyable activity but also was a way of contributing to the community. On the airport tour we were able to discover interesting new things about the airport that we use so often, by seeing it from a different point of view.

Comments from a partner organization

・ Thank you very much for choosing Narita Airport for this JTB Brighter Earth Project activity. Also thank you for your cleanup activities in the area of "Sakura No Oka Park", which helped to make it a more comfortable environment for all users.
After the activity, we were able to tour Narita Airport together, as I tried my best to describe subjects such as the current conditions of the airport, its community and environmental initiatives, and future prospects.
It would make us very happy if our efforts were to contribute to your business, even a little. While both our organizations continue to face difficult challenges due to COVID-19, I hope that we will be able to overcome these difficulties and help the entire industry to thrive, by helping each other. Thank you very much for your participation in this event.

・ I was very happy to be able to implement this airport tour program for students, which we have been conducting together since April, in line with the aims of the JTB Brighter Earth Project. With NAA’s cooperation, we were able to learn a lot of valuable information. We will reflect what we have learned in the program in the future, to make it even stronger!

"Sanrizuka Sakura No Oka Park" is located near the maintenance area on the south side of Narita International Airport’s Runway A. As its name implies, is a hill on which numerous cherry trees grow, and in the spring it is packed with many visitors who come to enjoy the combination of cherry blossoms and aircraft. This project involved cleanup activities while enjoying the views of arriving and departing aircraft, on a clear, windless day. Since the park is clean and well maintained, our cleanup activities were centered on the parking lot and nearby walkways.
In the afternoon, we went to Narita Airport’s Terminal 1 for a tour of the airport. This special tour helped to deepen participants’ understandings of the SDGs, as Community Coexistence Division Manager Abe of Narita International Airport Corporation (NAA) described the airport’s eco-airport initiatives, from the perspectives of the community and the environment, while showing us around the airport. This helped to deepen our understanding of its status as a sustainable airport. I believe that this was successful thanks in part to the cooperation of all Smile Committee members. I hope that we will continue internal communication within the branch and delivering real value to customers through Smile activities in the future as well.
