Aoshima Beach Cleanup Challenge

Overview The first part of this activity featured a seminar by Prof. Yasuda of the Department of Veterinary Sciences in the University of Miyazaki Faculty of Agriculture, on “The Relationship Between Wastes on the Aoshima Coast and Loggerhead Turtles.” The second part consisted of a competitive beach cleaning art contest using wastes collected on the Aoshima coast, conducted as a team-building exercise. Participants contributed to achieving the SDGs in a fun, game-like atmosphere, by transforming waste into art.

Comments from a partner organization

It was very enjoyable to participate in the beach cleanup activity, which unlike ordinary cleanup efforts involved creating art. We hope participants will play active roles in protecting the beach of Aoshima in the future as well.

Comments from the staff member responsible

This project, which was held for the first time in two years, featured beach cleanup activities to protect the Aoshima beach. Before cleaning up the beach, we heard a lecture by Prof. Masahiro Yasuda, who studies loggerhead turtles at the University of Miyazaki, about why we need to protect the beach and how it relates to the ecosystem of loggerhead turtles. Then, we took part in a game in which we split into teams to collect wastes on the Aoshima beach and create works of art on the theme of Aoshima. I felt so glad to have participated in organizing this event when I heard participants say that they had enjoyed it and wanted to participate again. It seems to me that this project, in which participants were able to enjoy beach cleanup efforts, is an activity that will help protect the loggerhead turtles' ecosystem. I hope that the scope of activities such as this will broaden in the future, with participants playing a central role.
